Parents, May 24th through June 6th marks the annual Click It or Ticket campaign. Click It or Ticket is the most successful seat belt enforcement campaign ever. Its aim is to save lives by getting more people to wear their seat belts. In the State of Delaware, everyone in the vehicle, including backseat passengers and children, must wear a seat belt. Lap and shoulder belts must be worn properly and the shoulder belts must not be placed behind the back or under the arm. The vehicle driver will receive a ticket if anyone in the vehicle fails to buckle up. Fines are $25 plus court fees which can total more than $70. Here are a few statistics to consider:
• Wearing a seat belt increases chance of surviving a crash by nearly 50%
• Ever hour, 150 kids between the ages of 0-19 are treated in ER’ s for injuries due to vehicle crashes
• Mile for mile, teens are involved in 3 times as many fatal crashes as all other drivers
• More kids ages 5-19 die from crash-related injuries than any other type of injury
• Compared to other age groups, teens have the lowest rate of seat belt use
• Most auto accidents happen within 25 miles of home and at speeds less than 45mph
Set a good example for your teens, buckle up yourself!
